.)    Keep moving.  Staying active during an attack is important.  During an episode, if a person tries to sit down and relax, they can actually make it worse.  Even though they are a psychological event, your brain is still being affected in a physical way.  When your body is in a state of panic, your brain releases extra adrenaline.  This adrenaline needs to be burned off.  When people are trying to sit still, the adrenaline in their body gives those people jitters and causes the “tingly feeling.”  Go for a walk or start moving around in some way.  In fact, people who make an effort to stay active in their lives on a daily basis will be able to bounce back from an episode much quicker than someone who does not.

.)    Recite the alphabet backwards. The point of this tip for these attacks is to re-focus your thinking on something else that requires mental effort.  The alphabet, for instance, is a neutral thought.  Associations of fear, panic and anxiety are not related to the alphabet.  It is, however, so common and easy for someone to say it forwards, that the best tip for panic attacks is to say it backwards.  You pay attention to the task at hand, rather than on the panic attack.

.)    Avoid caffeine. Your likelihood of having a panic attack increases if you are sensitive to caffeine.  I enjoy a good cup of coffee, so I have had to make the switch to decaf.  This tip for panic attacks also applies to other foods and beverages containing caffeine, such as: teas, chocolates, sodas, and even some over-the-counter pain killers.

.)    Stay in your environment. During an attack, your body goes through a “fight or flight” phase.  Whatever environment you are in that triggered the attack is likely caused by a phobia that has long been associated to a specific fear.  Running away from your situation only makes that phobia worse.  For this tip for an episode to be effective, you need to learn how to remedy the anxiety itself, rather than escape from it.  Phobias are a complex psychological disorder and, generally speaking, nearly every person has a phobia of some kind.  More research on phobias can be found online.

These tips for panic attacks are only a few that exist.  Try also adding a vitamin complex to your diet to regulate mood and boost serotonin.
