A sleep panic attack is basically the same as an anxiety attack except they happen at night interrupting your sleep.  These attacks are both the body’s way of protecting itself.  We have all a threshold for stress, for some people after reaching that threshold the mind and body must release some of the steam if you will.  This results in the panic attack, day or night.

There are medications that can help control these episodes, but there are other things you can do as well.  Remember these attacks are a result of a basic overdose of stress.  Worry, fear, stress, even emotional pain can trigger these episodes.

One of the biggest causes of stress is the desire to be everything to everyone and to do everything for everyone else.  We all must learn that it is acceptable to say no.  You don’t have to do everything that everyone asks of you.  You can say no and allow yourself to do so without guilt.  Your family and friends will still care about you even when you cannot do everything they ask. This is a very big stress reducer and can make a huge difference in your anxiety levels.

Make time for yourself.  Once you have learned to say no, you will find that you can actually make time to devote strictly to yourself.  This could be spent enjoying a hobby, taking a walk, going to the gym, simply relaxing or any activity that soothes you and gives you a sense of happiness and peace. Tests have proven that taking an hour out of your day to devote totally to yourself seriously lowers your stress levels.

If you are in an unhappy relationship, working at a job you hate or in any life situation that you know is causing you stress, change it!  Procrastination only leads to higher anxiety!  Many of us know what needs to be changed in our lives but are afraid to take the steps necessary to change them.  Ask for help from friends or family or a professional.  You will surely find that making the changes will dramatically improve your stress levels and that the fear that prevented you from changing in the past was unfounded.
