When you start to feel an attack coming on try these techniques as quickly as possible:
- Splash cold water in your face – this shocks the body and the mind, distracting it from focusing on the attack.
- Move around – dance, run, jump, get your body moving this helps focus your physical energy away from the attack.
- Talk to yourself – out loud or in your mind. Tell yourself that this attack is simply a release of pressure and cannot hurt you. It is your mind and body’s way of letting your stress level out. Take the power away from the attack and give it back to your logical side.
- Breathe- panic attacks come with fast, shallow breathing. As soon as you feel your breathing pattern begin to change, consciously take a very deep breath and slowly let it out. Try to slow your breathing down one breath at a time. This will relax your body and soothe your mind.
- Change your focus – pick up the closest object and start describing it aloud. Talk about every nuance of the object from color to size to texture and anything else you can think of to say about it. This gives your mind something else to focus on taking it away from the anxiety and the attack.
These techniques do work, but they require effort on your part. It will take time and practice so be willing to be consistent and determined! Don’t let panic attacks cause dysfunction in your life!
